Through this fascinating visual investigation, Vélez invites us to reflect on the impact of consumerism on our relationship with nature, using recycled materials that confront us with the urgent need to change how we interact with the environment. Each work becomes a testament to the human capacity to transform the ephemeral into something enduring, fusing the fragility of everyday elements with the solidity of polymer clay, giving shape to a regenerated flora. By juxtaposing the past with the present, Mimi Vélez creates a visual narrative in which nature reinvents itself, challenging the boundaries between the organic and the industrial, inviting a profound reflection on our "material legacy."

Mami Inc.
2007 – Mixed media installation, photography on fabric, video
A visual narrative of emotional labor and domestic repetition, Mami Inc. portrays a hyperbolized version of a typical day in the life of a middle-class Puerto Rican housewife. The series included seven large-scale photographs printed on fabric, common household materials, and a 15-minute short documentary.
Exhibited at: Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (MAC)

The Mami, Inc. project is an installation composed of a series of photographs and a digital video documentary, the purpose of which is to present the environment and daily routines of three full-time housewives. Through this installation, the artist constructs a parallel between the difficulties inherent in managing a commercial corporation and those of a micro-corporation such as a family. This introspection, according to the artist, is a tribute to the valuable work of Puerto Rican housewives, created to raise awareness within the family and society about a population that lives on the margins of the workforce, but whose work has been devalued by the constant drive toward today's excessive consumption. "A large percentage of women have abandoned conventionalities. A large percentage will never abandon them. Mami Inc. exposes and aims to reach the hearts and consciences of both professional men and women, housewives, and young people to somehow change their perception of the work of a housewife. It also wants to help awaken housewives to dedicate more time to their integral personal development, because to the extent that they value and care for themselves, others will do so as well. The most important thing is to achieve value, respect, and public recognition of the work of a housewife. A 24/7 job that knows no start or end times, that has no days off or holidays, that doesn't expect a paycheck on the 15th or 30th, and for which there is no retirement plan. Perhaps the most onerous profession in the world. When will these housewives stop being objects of their families and become subjects as valued as doctors and engineers in this society?"
